Church History

The Light of the World Faith and Word Church in Jamaica is part of a story of faith, partnership, missionary service, prayer, and perseverance.

The Beginning of the Mission

For more than five years, Apostle Johnny and Sherry Smith of the Light of the World Faith and Word Church in the United States regularly visited Jamaica as part of an annual Bible-giving mission. During one of those Bible missions in Montego Bay in 2015, they met Pastor Miguel and Deborah Samuels. The meeting began with a telephone call to express appreciation for the Bibles and an invitation to return.

Through that shared effort, a strong bond was formed between the Samuels and the Smiths. As the ministry developed, the need for a Light of the World Church home base in Jamaica became clear. Bible missions continued, reaching hotels, children’s homes, people on the streets, and communities including Montego Bay, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Canaan, and Dumfries.

A Home for the Work

A property was identified after efforts were made to learn whether it was available for rent or purchase. At first, the answer was repeatedly, “No, it is not available.” Through intense prayer, however, an open door was provided and a three-year rental agreement was secured.

A tent crusade began, followed by regular Sunday services and Bible studies. The rental was renewed for additional three-year periods, and during this time a permanent building was erected.

Continuing the Ministry

The Smiths later transferred the responsibility of overseeing the Jamaican work to the dedicated Samuels so that they could continue another missionary journey. The work of the Lord continued through regular feeding programs for less fortunate people, ministry to mentally challenged and bedridden persons, crusades, and street meetings.

When Hurricane Melissa destroyed the roof, the church remained determined that nothing would stop the work. Apostle Johnny Smith passed away in 2025. One year later, in 2026, the news came that the property was available for purchase. By God’s grace, the property was purchased and now also provides shelter for Dumfries Basic School, which needed a safe place after severe damage to its school building caused by Hurricane Melissa.

Today, the Light of the World Church continues to stand as a testimony of God’s faithfulness, the power of prayer, missionary partnership, and committed service to the people of Jamaica.
